Our standards

We don't list just anyone. That's good for you.

People come here because they've been burned before: the contractor who never called back, took a deposit and vanished, or had no license. Contractor problems are the #2 consumer complaint in the U.S. (Consumer Federation of America). So every business meets these 8 standards before we list it:

  1. Licensed when your state requires it for your work. We look it up and show the number on your page.
  2. Insured if you work on or in people's homes. We'll ask for proof.
  3. A real, local business with a real phone and a real person behind it.
  4. Answers fast. Reply to customers within 1 business day, even if it's “we're booked.”
  5. Prices in writing before work starts, and no surprise charges.
  6. Fair deposits that follow your state's rules. No big cash-up-front demands.
  7. Shows up when promised, or calls ahead.
  8. A clean record: no suspended license and no pattern of unresolved complaints.

Why this helps you: homeowners call with more trust when they know every business here was checked. You aren't lumped in with the bad ones. The check is free, and no one can pay to skip it. Read the full standards.

The math on pay-per-lead sites

If you've used Angi, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack or Bark, you know how it goes. Here it is on paper:

What a typical small contractor pays, per platform, per month

Angi · 8 leads at about $60 (real range $25–$120)$480
Thumbtack · 6 leads at about $40 (often sent to several pros)$240
Bark · credit pack (credits expire in about 12 months, no refunds)$200
Houzz Pro · monthly minimum$249
Typical spend on pay-per-lead sites$300–$1,000+ a month
Great Local Pros$0, or $49 flat for Premium

And on Thumbtack, pros in a 2025 lawsuit say the same lead often goes to several contractors. Many pros on Bark complain about prepaid credits spent on leads who never answer. Here, a call is just a call. Nobody else got your customer's number.

Why local pros list here

No lead fees

Pay-per-lead adds up fast, and on some sites the same lead goes to several pros. Here there's no auction and no per-lead bill.

You keep the customer

People call your number. No app sits in the middle taking a cut or scoring you.

Built for small towns

We list you by the towns you actually serve, not a 60-mile radius around a ZIP code.

No contract

Premium is month to month. Cancel from the email we send you. No exit fee.

Common questions from business owners

How is the listing actually free? What's the catch?
There's no catch. Free listings make our directory useful, which builds the audience that makes Premium worth paying for. We don't sell your data, don't run ads, don't charge per click. If we ever change this, free listings will stay free for everyone who already has one — that promise is written into our Terms.
What if I'm already on Angi or Thumbtack — should I drop them?
That's your call. Many pros run both for a few months and compare. The math usually settles it: if you spend more than $49/mo on per-lead platforms (most pros spend $200–$1,000), Great Local Pros pays for itself the day you list. We won't pressure you either way.
How do you handle bad reviews?
We don't filter them, hide them, or charge you to bury them. Reviews are verified by email before publishing. If a review is factually false (not just negative), you can flag it and we'll investigate — same as any reputable site. Per FTC guidelines, we don't accept paid reviews from anyone, including the business itself.
Can I cancel Premium any time?
Yes — from the billing email we send you, no phone call required. We don't pro-rate refunds for partial months (industry standard), but there's never a cancellation fee or contract.
What happens after 500 founder spots are taken?
New Premium signups move to $79/mo (the standard rate). Founders keep their $49/mo as long as their Premium listing stays active. If you cancel and rejoin later, you'd come back at the then-current rate.
Is Great Local Pros a real company?
Yes. We're Pithe Digital Group LLC, registered in Oregon. All legal/contact info is on the About and Contact pages. Email info@greatlocalpros.com any time.
I saw my business listed without me submitting it. How?
In a few pilot towns, we added a business name and phone number from public sources (the business's own website, directories or state filings) before we set our listing standards. Those listings are marked Not verified. You can claim yours for free and get checked, or ask us to remove it. We handle both within 48 hours.
Why do you check every business?
Because that's what homeowners want most. They're tired of pros who don't call back, don't have a license or take a big deposit and disappear. When people know every business here passed our checks, they call with more trust. That's good for honest pros.
What if my work doesn't need a license?
That's fine. Many kinds of work, like cleaning, dog walking, tutoring or detailing, don't need a state license. Leave the license box blank. You still need to meet our other standards.
What's the long-term plan?
Stay small, stay local, stay flat-rate. We don't have venture capital pushing us toward an IPO that would force us to start selling leads. We're a small team funded by Premium subscriptions and website packages, and we plan to keep it that way.
